Learning

Wyvern is a place where everyone is given an equal opportunity to be different and to succeed. We educate the academically brilliant and those who find school life difficult. All students are given equal access to a stimulating and demanding curriculum.
Students are organised into mixed ability tutor groups for registration and mixed ability classes for some lessons. We have ability sets starting in Year 7 in Maths, Science and Languages and this increases as students go up through the Years. We assess student progress at least four times a year through formal tests and informal assessments. From these results we set targets for improvement and share all this information with parents.
The average class size is about 27 with some sets being smaller and others bigger. All our classes are taught by specialist teachers and we also have our own team of cover staff to reduce the need to rely on supply teachers from outside the school if teachers are away for any reason.
All students are allocated to a mixed ability tutor group in year seven. Each year team of tutors is led by a Year Leader. Their role is to make sure that all students are performing to the best of their ability, as well as to deal with any problems that may arise.
If you have any problems with school, the first person you should always contact is your child's tutor.
